The Crucible is a 1953 play by Arthur Miller set during the Salem witch trials of 1692 in colonial Massachusetts. The story follows a group of young girls whose false accusations of witchcraft lead to mass hysteria, fear, and injustice in the community. At the center is John Proctor, a farmer who struggles with guilt over a past affair with Abigail Williams, one of the accusers. As accusations spiral out of control, the court condemns innocent people based on lies, rumors, and personal grudges. Proctor ultimately must choose between saving his life by confessing to witchcraft or dying to preserve his integrity.
