2024 Adventures in Cyberland Awards
Greystones Community College celebrated student success at the National Cyberland Awards Ceremony held in UCD O'Reilly Hall last week. The event spotlighted innovative and fascinating projects from schools around the country celebrating the impactful work taking place in classrooms in the area of computer science and cybersecurity education. The theme of this year’s competition was ‘Busting gender bias in Computer Science and Cyber security;
GCC’s digitally resilient learners submitted a large number of projects across 1st, 2nd and 3rd year, with 11 projects being award bronze standard, 10 being award silver standard and 9 achieving the top-rated gold standard and being presented with trophies from Minister Ossian Smyth and Dr. Rachel Farrell from the UCD school of education.
Stand out mention winning the overall awards;
- Overall 1st Place (1st Year) - ‘Unplugged: SCAM Card Game for Cybersecurity Awareness’ created by Edgar Withers, Donnchadh Eager O’Brien, Tadgh Vines, Joshua Taglienti, Leonard O’Sullivan and Tyler Ferguson.
- Overall 1st Place (2nd Year) - ‘Unplugged: Cyber Security Top Trumps Card Game’ Created by Daragh Gargan, Neil Grennan, Oliver Finan, Oliver Chester and Tiernan Farrell.
- Overall 1st Place (3rd Year) – ‘Gone Phishing Online Game’ created by Gustavs Vitols, Aashad Saleem, Pijus Siupinys and Dax Fulmer.
- Teacher Academy Project Sustainability Award – ‘Impact of Data Centres on the Environment’ developed by Orianna McGuigan, Etain Finnerty, Hannah O’Hare, Elisabeta Moisa, Dylan Phibbs O’Connor, Tadgh Duffy.
- Special Award – ‘Unplugged: 'Clue' Board Game Promoting Awareness of Gender in Computer Science and Cybersecurity created by Maddison Roche, Ciara Davy, Peter Rossiter, Maja Borkowska, Shannon McCormack, Rosa Mae Flyn
- Special Award – ‘Unplugged: Cybersecurity Board Game’ created by Sam Farren, Oisin Ward, Max Montgomery
- Special Award – ‘Scam Destroyer From Scratch!’ created by Elliot Palud Lenehan, Finlay Tait, Daniel Pan and Daniel Zharkoy
- Special Award – ‘Hackers Awareness Video’ created by EllaSophia Djerassi, Louis McMahon, Alfie Doyle, Muhammad AliRehaan Mohoboob, Alan Stenka and Sophie Chenaux
- Special Award – ‘Unplugged: Cybersecurity Board Game for Young Children’ created by Kate MacNamara, Oliver KavanaghLord, KeelieRose Gallagher and Abbey Lynch.
Special thanks to teachers Mr. Flood, Ms. Nevin, Mr. O'Brien and Mr. Carroll for mentoring the students in these projects. Thanks to the team at UCD School of Education for the opportunity to showcase our projects to Minister Ossian Smyth who oversees the Communications and Cybersecurity.
