Student Support & Guidance at Greystones Community College reflects the values of our 3 Foundation Stones of Respect, Excellence and Pride. The individual strengths and needs of each student are respected through the variety of supports that Student Support and Guidance provides. Each student is empowered to achieve Excellence and take Pride in their own personal, educational and career development.
Underpinned by Respect, Excellence and Pride, the Guidance Department at Greystones Community College supports students in three main areas-
Educational Guidance: The Guidance Counsellor provides individual supports to students around subject choice, self-motivation, study skills, organisational skills and examination techniques. The Guidance Counsellor contributes to whole school supports around these topics through talks and resource sharing throughout the year, particularly during times of transition, exam preparation and post exam results.
Career Guidance: Senior students have a weekly Career Guidance class where they learn about which career might suit them best. They are guided to explore all of the potential routes to post-secondary education such as the CAO system, Further Education routes and Apprenticeship and Training Programmes.
Input around subject choice leading up to 5th year preparation is provided to ensure students develop an understanding of how the subjects they choose for their Leaving Cert will impact on the educational opportunities available to them after school.
All Year Groups can access the Careers Portal Information on this page, it provides a wealth of Information on all aspects of further study and careers. During College Awareness week in November and through other whole school initiatives throughout the year, students can research their potential career paths.
Personal Counselling: Individual Counselling is available with the Guidance Counsellor to students during times of difficulty or crisis. Counselling aims to empower students to deal with challenges in life and develop the skills to manage and cope with issues such as stress, bereavement and friendship issues. The college also has access to a Psychotherapist who can provide more intensive supports for students.
The Guidance Counsellor referral system for any of the individual supports discussed above is arranged by contacting the relevant Year Head.
