Business Studies focuses on improving students’ understanding of the business environment and on developing skills for life, work, and further study through three strands: Personal Finance; Enterprise; Our Economy. Personal Finance develops skills, knowledge and values that allow students to make informed decisions to effectively and responsibly manage their financial resources (e.g. budgeting, insurance, taxation, consumer). Enterprise encourages students to identify opportunities and turn them into practical and targeted activities within business and wider society. It develops an understanding of financial, marketing and operational functions by developing business ideas, marketing plans, final accounts, and industrial relations. Our Economy enables students to understand the dynamic relationship between local, national and international economics (e.g. scarcity and choice, national budget, international trade).

The Junior Cycle Business Studies Course is divided into 3 strands:
- Personal Finance - Personal finance focuses on students developing a set of skills, knowledge and values that allows them to make informed decisions to effectively and responsibly manage their financial resources
- Enterprise - Enterprise encourages students to identify opportunities and turn them into practical and targeted activities within business and wider society through the development and application of their understanding, skills and values
- Our Economy - Our economy enables students to understand the dynamic relationship between the local, national and international economic situation. It develops students’ ability to identify and understand basic economic concepts as they relate to personal finance, enterprise and the Irish economy

Business Studies is an up-front and logical subject which is relevant to the student’s everyday lives and one where the knowledge and skills learned are transferrable across many areas of student’s lives as well as various other subjects.

| How is this subject assessed? |
- Students will complete two Classroom Based Assessments (CBAs), they will then complete an Assessment Task on the 2nd of these CBAs which will be worth up to 10% off their overall Junior Cycle Business Studies Grade.
- The final Junior Cycle Business Exam in 3rd Year will be worth a total of 90% of the students overall Business Studies Grade.
